A strange one. Sparse black fruit. Looks like a hybrid? There is C. tenuicaulis, C. areolata and C. propinqua around here.

Three plants on dry clay cut bank of public walking track. Seeds 4.5 mm long, cuspis <0.5mm, involucral hairs. Avi Holzapfel, revisor of this genus in Australia confirmed the species level identification. New record for Picton, unrecorded in the upper South Island since 1800s when Thomas Cheeseman collected it from Nelson (Fox Hill).
On drier alluvial forest under totara. Five meters squared patch, plants to 50cm tall, no flowers or fruit present. A new population record but potential for being planted at this site.
On rocks and boulders sticking out above the river.
Growing in amongst rocks in the middle of the riverbed and along the margins.
