Spider with a beetle-like appearance, total length btw 1/2” and 3/4”, seen just North of the main gate in the Conservatory Garden
In my roadside strip. It's climbing on rice hulls
Five purses (one on far right is in shadow). Largest purse had resident but it didn't show itself, of course. Second pic is a closeup of a pupal case on purse nearest cicada pupa. Just wondering whether that might be a parasitic wasp that attacks spider.
This fence in residential area was practically lined with pursewebs
Spiderlings were ballooning and leaving gossamer threads. Dense population here.
Went back to the spot of my Nov. 20th observation to see if I could find any more in the area, and found webs at the base of several other trees nearby.
