I am a naturalist originally from Ontario, Canada but currently traveling in South America for several years. My initial exploits in the natural world involved reptiles and amphibians and it was a slippery slope from there, as birds followed, then butterflies, then dragonflies, then moths, etc. Birds dominated my life for a few years but I am getting back into many other taxa, especially Lepidoptera at the moment. Insects have always fascinated me and I've been wading into this world and trying to learn as much as I can. Botany has become an interest of mine, and I am working on improving my identifications. Please do let me know if I've made a mistake as I am always keen to keep learning and improving.

My wife and I quit our jobs in August 2019 with a plan to travel throughout the Neotropics for several years. Currently we are in Ecuador which is where we will be until the end of 2019, and in 2020 we hope to travel extensively in Colombia and Peru, or wherever else opportunities arise!

I also work as a guide for Quest Nature Tours, leading tours in several locations (Colombia, Galapagos, Cuba, Borneo, Spain, etc). I love visiting remote places. Some of my favorite activities include watching bird migration in the autumn on the shores of James Bay, night-hiking in the Neotropics (I have a particular fascination with Bolitoglossa salamanders and any and all snakes), spending time with a population of Eastern Massassaugas at a location I've visited for the last decade, and searching for endemic bird species in far flung locations. I finally joined iNaturalist after some gentle prodding from several friends and have quickly grown addicted. As far as I am concerned its the best thing to happen since eBird!
