I retired in 2005 from the University of Toronto where I studied plant structure and development, specifically tissue specialization in plants with C4 photosynthesis, leaf development in palms, gesneriads and aroids, and vascular architecture and development in the genetic model Arabidopsis. Although I was a lab-based botanist, I have always enjoyed natural history as a focus for outdoor activity, ever since my childhood in the San Francisco area of California. Immigrating to Canada and living in the Toronto area heightened my appreciation for migratory birds and the flush of spring growth and led me to focus on birding and botanizing in the years since. I’ve been a volunteer for Nature Conservancy Canada (Ontario), Ontario Nature and the Toronto Field Naturalists and have been fortunate to travel widely in recent years. Discovering iNaturalist has expanded my horizons and created much enjoyment, especially during these Covid-19 times. I am very grateful for all the identifications and tips on how best to use iNaturalist from other members of the community.
