I am a retired professional forester in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island with specialty in silviculture. Most people think silviculture is tree-planting. But it is much more than that. There are other silvicultural systems besides clear-cutting. Practicing silviculture effectively requires knowledge of land forms, fish and wildlife habitat requirements, logging techniques, regulations, fire behavior and requires consulting with other biological professionals. Some of it rubs off.
I'm also an avid birder. I'm really good with trees, bushes and with forest plants. Not not so hot with rocky bluffs alpine, and seashore plants. Ocean and tidal stuff? Forget it. I'm a land-lubber. Bugs? Limited.
