I have built a couple certified wildlife habitats in my backyard and at my church. The habitats provide food, water, shelter and places to raise young for wildlife. The habitats include rain gardens, woodland gardens and butterfly gardens, with native plants for full sun and shade, wet and dry, herbs, shrubs and trees. I grew up in a hollow surrounded by forest and abundant wildlife. I miss that and commune with the bits of habitat I have built or can find around Silver Spring, Maryland. I go walking and observing in the Sligo Creek Park, the Dennis Avenue Settlement Ponds and the wildlife habitats I have developed. I take action based on the calls to action of the local, regional and national wildlife groups. I completed watershed stewardship training with a regional group and a lot of self-training regarding the field of wildlife habitat restoration.
