Peat mosses and other bryological highlights in the valley of the Upper Wark

Since 2017 efforts have been made to establish a most complete cartography of the occurencies of Sphagnum mosses in the area. In former years Sphagnum mosses had been found in the Neiwiss and Haarzebruch blanket bogs near Grosbous, as well as in the forests around Buschrodt. More recently, relatively important areas of up to 200 ares covered with peat mosses have been found in older spruce forests in an area around Grosbous, Dellen and Mertzig. From the  19 Sphagnum species that are known to occur in Luxembourg, 9 species have as far been found  in the Upper Wark area. These are S. palustre, S. auriculatum, S. capillifolium, S. fallax, S. fimbriatum, S.flexuosum, S. inundatum, S. squarrosum, and S. teres.

Other bryological highlights in this area are several occurences of the very seldom Hookeria lucens and Trichocolea tomentella.
