節目中稱另一種 dragonfly 的字源來自「羅馬尼亞語」drac (字幕上是用 drag)，有惡魔的意思。這的確是十分罕見的。現存拉丁語系(Romance Language)的五大語言中(法語、西班牙語、葡萄牙語、義大利語、羅馬尼亞語)，對於英語(或是人類)影響最小的就是羅馬尼亞語，但是 dragonfly (蜻蜓)這個字卻可能是來自羅馬尼亞語！！

一般是把一個字拆解，來探究其詞源(etymology)。dragonfly, 很明顯的就是 dragon + fly。

通常字源的解釋都是沒有什麼創意的，和大多數的字一樣 dragon 這個字來自古法語 (dragon)，而這個古法語字又是從拉丁的 draconem 來的(*1)，這個拉丁字(主格 nominative 是 draco，現在天上的天龍座就用這個字) 是大蛇或龍(huge serpent, dragon)的意思。而這個拉丁字又是來自希臘字drakon (genitive drakontos) "serpent, giant seafish" .......。

fly 一樣常見的詞源：來自原始日耳曼語，意思是會飛的昆蟲。

事實上，豆娘在西班牙語叫做 caballito del diablo。caballito 是 caballo (馬)的指小詞(dimunitive)，就像英語的 horse 和 pony 的關係 (cat, kitty/kitten; dog, doggie/puppy ..) diablo 就是惡魔(野柳的名字就是從這個字來的，西班牙名是 Punta del Diablo 惡魔角，名稱音節太多，只取最後兩個音節的音)。直譯就是 pony of devil，惡魔的小馬。如果只是要說明和「惡魔」有關，何不用一個現在還有四億八千六百萬人使用的語言為例，而要用很牽強的「古羅馬尼亞語」？

當然網路上也可以找到那神奇的古羅馬尼亞語字源的說法。(*3)
a book written by Eden Emanuel Sarot in 1958 entitled Folklore of the Dragonfly: A Linguistic Approach (*4). He theorized that the name dragonfly actually came about because of an ancient Romanian Folktale. In the folktale, the Devil turned a beautiful horse ridden by St. George (of St. George and the dragon fame) into a giant, flying insect. The Romanian names the people supposedly refed to this giant insect (when translated into English) mean ‘St. George’s Horse’ or, more commonly, ‘Devil’s Horse.’

原來是 Eden Emanuel Sarot 在 1958 年著書「蜻蜓的民間故事：從語言學角度著手」(*4)中提出字源是古羅馬尼亞語這樣的假說或理論。又在網上搜了一下，這位 Eden E. Sarot 也只有這一部 79 頁的著作，並沒有什麼其他語言學的作品。所以這本書應該也不是什麼可靠、嚴謹的著作。

關於詞源 etymology 的分析，通常「很有創意」的，都是比較具有娛樂性質，鮮有例外。
