San Diego City Nature Challenge 2019

Thank you to all of you who participated in the San Diego City Nature Challenge (SDCNC)! Almost 25,000 observations of vascular plants made during the 4-day period in San Diego County have been added to iNat by 848 observers. Although fewer people submitted plant observations during this year’s SDCNC compared to last year’s, the number of observations increased by almost 3,000! Great job finding plants this year! Currently, the most observed plant species during this year’s challenge was Blue Dicks (Dichelostemma capitatum) with over 300 observations, followed by Wild Cucumber (Marah macrocarpa). In 2018, the most observed plant species during the SDCNC was California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum), followed by Lemonade Berry (Rhus integrifolia). The San Diego County Plant Atlas Project on iNaturalist now has over 225,000 observations! At higher elevations in our county, peak bloom time has yet to arrive, so there are still lots of observations waiting to be made! Be sure to review our tips on Photographing Plants for iNaturalist and keep up the good work of submitting plant observations!
