I have to admit, the Mountain Beaver is an animal I have wanted to see for many years, but chalked it up there with Spotted Bat and Pygmy Sperm Whale in that I know they are out there, but the odds of me finding one are......
So, I was more than delighted to have been able to spend a good 15 minutes watching this one at close range as it repeatedly carried mouthfuls of dry grass and green conifer twigs to its burrow under the snow.

Found by Sophie Cameron. Appeared to be drinking from the creek (photo 3 is as found). I was hopeful that my adventures in this canyon would be rewarded with one of these secretive snakes, but I never thought I would actually see one. I was out of my mind when I saw it and was more excited to find this guy than any other snake I have ever found. Was very bitey, and bit me and Sophie several times. At one point, it latched onto Sophie's shirt and held on, even chewing into the shirt like it was prey. One of my all time favorite wildlife encounters by far!!!

This lovely couple lives under the recycling bin inside my garage. They can easily come and go outside, and I suspect they like being warm and dry under the bin. I see them once every two weeks when I carefully pull the bin outside.

Day Seven: On my way out to Snow Creek I decided to make a brief half hour stop at the home of the Pygmy owls. Was with the company of a friend with whom I promised we would encounter them when stopping by. On arrival I spotted one of the adults perched in the exact same dying pine from days prior. Then when we went over to get a look at the nest cavity we saw not one, but two owlets make their way up to the entry hole for a peek at us! I noticed one of the owlets seemed to be a bit more mature than the other, it even nudged the smaller owlet away from view as we all stared at one another for minutes on end.

Despite the name 'rocky mountain', I have reason to agree with the studies that state this subspecies occurs not only in idaho and montana but south to arizona and the sierras in nevada and california. I think this frame shows some of the different characteristics in this color of this red-phase and its facial expression, particularly the whites above the eye. The vocalization is sharper in quality and more consistent with the recordings taken in the rocky mountains and elsewhere in the sierras.
