I want to be a naturalist when I grow up!
In the meantime, I peruse roadsides in rural Anson County, NC, looking for native wildflowers. I add my finds to the project, ‘North Carolina Piedmont Roadside Native Plants’. I am continually surprised at how many rare wildflowers I find on the side of the road. These are automatically collected in the project ‘Rare Vascular Plants of North Carolina’ and you can see them there.
I have set myself a goal of recording wildflowers on every road and every street in my county. I have been doing that at a rate of about 100 roads each year for just over 3 years. It has been a true adventure! If I continue to observe at that same rate it should take me at least another 2 and 1/2 years to reach my goal.
Update: As of 9/4/22 I have recorded 4,283 observations of 413 different native wildflower species on 343 Anson County Roads.
