Journal 1 (Derek Wang)

The garlic chive (or Allium tuberosum) was located on the phylogenic tree under flowering plants. It is a part of the onion family and it is related to onions and garlics (it resembles garlics more than chives). All of the observations done this week are flowering plants (angiosperms), and one adaptation that they have in common is having stems. Stems have many important functions. They provide support for leaves, flowers and fruits and keep the leaves in the light. Transport of fluids between the roots and the shoots in the xylem and phloem is done through stems. Stems also store nutrients and produce new living tissues. One unique adaptation that treasure flowers (Genus Gazania) have is that they are able to close their flowers heads. They especially look for sunlight and when they are in the shade or when it is cloudy, they close their flower heads.
