The Accidental Citizen Science of Security Cameras.

This photo of the mystery puma was captured on a security camera by musician Chris Stills (son of Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills, and Nash). Stills tweeted the photo, which was how I saw it. The photo inspired me to put some camera traps (motion-activated cameras designed to document wildlife) out in Franklin Canyon, the closest open space to the original security camera location. After a year of camera trapping, I eventually got a couple of puma photos. I would never have considered surveying for a puma in the isolated Franklin Canyon if it hadn't been for that original surprising security camera footage.

Sonoma County wildlife show amazing recovery after wildfires.

By the end, more than 85 percent of Pepperwood’s 3,200 acres — home to 900 species of plants and animals — would burn, mostly at a low to moderate intensity. By the time Hammerich and the rest of the Pepperwood staff returned several weeks later, many field cameras had completely melted. But in other cameras the storage cards survived, allowing them to piece together a rare narrative of wildlife survival.

Winter's Top 5 Wildlife Webcams.

Peregrine Falcons

Take a virtual trip to Anacapa Island, off the coast of Ventura, California, to hang out with a family of Peregrine Falcons. These fierce winged raptors have been known to build their nests with a view—whether patrolling from cliffs, electricity pylons, or skyscrapers, they’re constantly surveying for ground critters and birds to swoop down on and scoop. Peregrine Falcons were critically endangered, due to pesticide exposure, in the mid-1900s, but have since made a tremendous recovery thanks to restoration efforts. Watch these magnificent birds of prey lay and protect eggs, and care for their young, via the “Anacapa Peregrine Falcon Cam."
